MHBMYC Yesterday…………and the Future……………Input please.
Twelve members spent a pleasant hour or so at the cove yesterday sailing Solings and DF95 all-in together. Bill Raposa had a tech problem before we got started and did most of the “heavy lifting” by placing the marks and performing most of the rescues although Wilkie also had to rescue his boat twice. Many thanks to Bill.Sue and Steve Walsh had brought their Solings as had Bruce, Paul, and Pat. Pat Donovan was also embroiled in tech issues. Paul’s Soling also succumbed before the morning was out, so that left mostly DF95s in the water. Manny sailed his new boat with a new number, 60. Will, Jim Kelly, Dick Mahoney, and Bill Northup had some close racing. The morning finished with an impromptu match race between Will and Dick. Will led the whole way round, but just got beaten on the final run to the finish line.Paul Mercer suggested we start racing and scoring. A number of members present thought this was a good idea. Let me know what you think and I’ll draw up a schedule for the remainder of the season. My initial thoughts are that we could have 10 race days with the best 6 to count (or 8 with the best 5 to count). The only issue is racing both classes on the same day…..but we can try.Two days of Match Racing for each class to be held on Thursdays. Please let me know how you feel.Let’s assume the season will commence at 11 am next Tuesday, June 30th when it will be low tide at 09.36. Choose your boat or bring both.Stay safe and well,Derek
June 16th
Thirteen members turned up at the cove today and we had a number of races, two Solings, and the remainder DF95s. We battled a quirky wind vaguely from the north and enjoyed the sunshine, the water, and the companionship.
The general feeling was that there isn’t much interest in a meeting today so we have decided to abandon the meeting this month and next month unless there’s something we all need to discuss.
If anyone has anything to discuss now, I will log onto Zoom at 3pm……also in case anyone has not read this email first!
A great time today. I hope to see you all next Tuesday at 11.00 am when the high tide will be at around 10.30.
Derek
June 16th
Next Tuesday, June 16th, is forecast to be a beautiful day. Tide will be low at 10:30AM. Breeze expected to from ENE at 8 knots. Great day for more informal fun racing. Hope you will join us!
June 9, 2020
Beautiful day at the cove yesterday. 8 boats were there to “shake off the rust”. Only issue was the lack of a breeze. Only 1 painfully slow fun race was completed. Still….it was a fun day and all there complied with the Covid 19 rules. Please join us next week as we continue the unscored racing.
MHBMYC “Opening Up”
The opening up yesterday was just a tiny chink, but it was a start.Rob, Will, and Bill Raposa went down to the cove early and got the marks in the water.Well done and thanks to all.Paul Mercer and I had brought our Solings and Rob had his DF95We were very pleased to welcome back Dan McHugh, Dan retired on May 1st so he is free to race with us this year. He brought his Soling too so we had three Solings in the water and Rob’s DF95. We splashed about for about twenty or thirty minutes and Rob sailed the DF95 that he’d built for Manny. Manny picked up his new boat from Rob so we’ll have Manny back racing as well.Maybe more members will put a toe in the water next Tuesday, June 9th at 11 am. It will be high tide at 11.48 so this might present a challenge for “Social Distancing”Stay well,Derek
May 30, 2020
From June 1st, Rhode Island is going into Phase Two of opening up which will mean gatherings of fifteen will now be allowed. Social distancing will still be required and masks should be worn.We will not be running any formal competition until further notice, but we can run some races if sufficient people want to race. There are no marks in the water at present, but we’ll get them in if there’s sufficient interest. If you would like to start racing, please let Rob or me know.Thank you. Stay safe and well,Derek
Zoom meeting May 19, 2020
MHBMYC Meeting of May 19th, 2020 at 3 pm
Meeting notes
Attendees: David, Rob, Kim, Paul, Manny, Wilkie, Bruce, Dick M, Jim K, Bill David, Bill Raposa and Derek. Ned emailed to say he was unable to log on.
Dave, as host, welcomed everyone to our second Zoom meeting and sorted out the technical and user problems. Thanks Dave.
Derek and Rob made some brief opening and welcoming remarks. The notes of the last meeting had been circulated and were deemed to be more or lesswhat happened.
Kim gave the Treasurer’s report and stated that the club had a total of $291.04 at the last meeting and we now have a total of $291.05 thanks to the miracle of compounding.
Jim Pascalides wasn’t in the meeting, but he had sent an email stating that sadly he would be unable to join us for racing this season owing to a hip problem. We send him our best wishes.
In view of this situation, Rob offered to fill the void as Acting DF95 Fleet Captain.
Paul stated that he adds items to the website as they become available. Recent items were provided by Wilkie and Jim P. so visit mhbmyc.org to see them all.
Rob led the discussion about when we might be able to start racing. There is no change from the last meeting. At the present time in RI, groups are limited to 5 or less people with 6ft social distancing.
Rob said that he had made the lockable box that will be located by the steps to the beach. This will be used to store oars, marks etc. There will be several sets of keys distributed to various members. Rob intends to fasten the box securely with chains so that it can be removed for the off season. The plan is that Will and Bill R will pick up the box next Tuesday, May 26th at10.00 and Rob will install the box the same day.
Charlie Smith had contacted Bill Raposa to see if he could help the club with placing the buoys. We will accept with thanks.
We decided to collect the annual membership dues now. Derek will send out a note.
It was good to see everyone again. The next Zoom meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 16th at 3 pm.

Soling 1 Meter Update
The new Soling 1 meter boat is coming along. The inside Keel support is taking much time for design as this piece is probably the most important component of the boat. The mounting system is to be built out of plastic, injection molded and fit perfectly in side the hull. It will also serve as the radio board support.
We should have a boat for testing soon.
Meeting by Zoom 4/23/20
MHBMYC Meeting of April 23rd, 2020 at 3PM
Attendees: David, Rob, Kim, Paul, Manny, Wilkie, Bruce, Jim P and Derek. Dick M, Jim K and Bill joined towards the end of the meeting. Ed had sent apologies. Ned emailed to say he was unable to log on and Steve phoned towards the end of the meeting (tech. difficulties).
Dave, as host, welcomed everyone to our first Zoom meeting and explained how to navigate the system.
Derek and Rob made some brief opening and welcoming remarks. The minutes of the last meeting had been circulated with the agenda and were approved by a show of hands.
Kim gave the Treasurer’s report and stated that the club now has an EIN and has a total of $291 in the bank. The subject of membership dues came up and Manny suggested that we waive dues until we actually startracing. Agreed by show of hands.
Jim Pascalides suggested that if we race both classes of boat on the same day (We have already agreed to try this for the first 4 or 5 days) the DF95s should race after the Solings as the wind tends to get stronger as the day goes on. This was agreed.
Paul and Wilkie stated that the club’s new website is up and running successfully. mhbmyc.org is the place to visit. Paul has also created a Facebook page for the club. The name is Mount Hope Bay Model Yacht Club. Paul also mentioned that he has scorekeeping software that, run on a tablet, will allow us to have the racing results before we leave the beach.
Rob led the discussion about when we might be able to start racing. The AMYA has already stated that racing is cancelled through June and we will comply with the State and local directives. At the present time in RI groups are limited to 5 or less people with 6ft social distancing. Rob said that he planned to build a lockable box to be located by the steps to the beach. This will be used to store oars, marks etc. There will be several sets of keys distributed to various members
It was great to see everyone and to have a successful meeting. The next Zoom meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 3 pm.
